Alireza Falsafi, Attorney at Law

Alireza Falsafi is a lawyer in Quebec, Canada and holds a PhD in international business and economic law from McGill University. He is a recipient of an award of doctoral scholarship from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) as well as McGill graduate fellowships.

He benefits from his in-house experience within a national oil company where he provided legal services related to complex international contracts in dealings with multinational companies investing and participating in major energy infrastructure projects. Advanced legal education and research have further enriched his expertise in international contracts and international investment law matters. In his writings and presentations, he has explored normative structures in international law and beyond and discussed complex legal issues surrounding foreign direct investment, trade and investment treaties, commercial and investment arbitration, state contracts, and international oil contracts.

  • In-depth exploration of the structure of rights and principles in legal theory and international law underlying rule formation and interpretation in the rule of law discourse
  • Extensive research and analysis of legal rules and frameworks on foreign direct investment attraction, protection, and dispute settlement along with strategies and risks for both states and investors under international contracts, investment treaties and public international law
  • Significant in-house experience, most notably in:
    • Complex international tenders and contracts in the execution of largescale onshore and offshore projects implemented with foreign investment and participation for the exploration and development of oil and gas fields
    • International contract negotiations including participation in major contract negotiations with multinational companies such as BP, BHP, ENI, and Maersk
    • International tender and contract preparation, drafting and negotiation, review and interpretation, and advice on legal and contractual provisions, risks and disputes related to project activities spanning oil and gas field operations and services, design and engineering, procurement, construction, insurance, and maritime transport
    • Various types of international agreements and contracts such as joint venture and joint operating agreements, consulting agreements, offshore drilling & well services contracts, and turnkey EPC contracts for onshore and offshore pipelines, platforms, and production facilities as well as master contracts of investment and operating services for the exploration and development of oil and gas fields
  • Participation in Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) research projects on multidisciplinary studies of bilateral, reginal and multilateral economic agreements including the Canadian, European, and U.S. free trade and investment treaties
